The solenoid coil is an electromagnetic component that turns electrical energy into a mechanical force. The coil produces an electromagnetic field when an electrical current is presented. The magnetic force allows the cylindrical ferromagnetic core to enter or exit the coil body, resulting in a push/pull action. Hence, the core can act as a plunger or a latch mechanism for various mechanical applications, for example, latch lock, valve control, actuator, and so forth. Because the solenoid coil unit comes in a cylindrical structure and creates an axial motion, it is commonly called a linear solenoid or tubular solenoid.

The motion of the linear solenoid is controlled by electrical signals (voltages and currents). Without the electrical signal, a spring forces the core out of the coil and maintains it in an OUT position. When a current enters the coil, it produces a magnetic force and attracts the core, causing the core to move to the IN position. Using this mechanism, the linear solenoid is an efficient door lock system, and we can use electrical signals to unlock the door. The same mechanism applies to actuate valves. The core can block and unblock the valve to control a flow or change the direction of the flow. The solenoid actuator is prevalent across multiple industrial sectors because of its effectiveness and simplicity.
